Sustainability at Alberta Distillers Limited

At Alberta Distillers Limited, we believe that great spirits are crafted with care—not just for the palate, but for the planet. Our commitment to sustainability is woven into every aspect of our operations, reflecting our dedication to preserving the environment for future generations.
Alberta Distillers has seen many of its liquids earn world renown awards. Sustainable practices play a part of making products consumers love:
We believe the best spirits start with the best ingredients
And let’s be honest—our grains and water are not just good; they’re among the finest in the world, fueling our award-winning spirits and their distinct profiles.
We take great pride in carefully blending Canadian prairie grains, grown by dedicated farmers who have been part of our journey for decades, with glacier water from the Rocky Mountains.
As we craft our exceptional spirits, we’re not just raising a glass; we’re also rolling up our sleeves to nurture the environment and ingredients that make them special. Because every sip should celebrate the land we love.
Sustainable Barrels
Many of our whiskies develop their unique character while aging in barrels that have a story of their own. Sourced exclusively from cooperages committed to environmentally responsible practices, these barrels were previously used for bourbon-making. The American White Oak comes from sustainably certified forests, all in line with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).
All our Canadian whisky barrels are sourced from previously used bourbon barrels from our parent company. These barrels are made in accordance with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), ensuring responsible sourcing and sustainability in our aging process.
Making Every Drop Count
Every drop of water is precious to us. We strive to balance our usage across our operations and have achieved a 4%* improvement in our water usage, equivalent to about 6.5 Olympic-sized swimming pools!
* Water Usage Efficiency: End of 2024: 5% reduction vs. 2015 baseline (16.44 to 15.63 kl); Total water usage: 4% (416,280 kl to 399,714 kl).
Waste Not
We repurpose the spent grain from our distillation process, known as stillage, is collected, and beneficially reused as liquid animal feed. This practice eliminates the need for additional energy and emissions to dewater or dry the stillage, promoting a circular economy—ensuring that nothing goes to waste.
Bold Spirits—Light Footprints
We are working to make our operations more efficient, making moves like switching out traditional "fire tube" boilers for high-efficiency, low-emissions natural gas boilers. As we reduce our carbon footprint, we are also supporting renewable energy development and purchase renewable energy attribute certificates. We’ve cut our energy usage by about 10%**—enough to power more than 600 average Canadian households for a year! Overall, we reduced our emissions by 20%***, equivalent to the emissions from more than 1,200 gasoline-fueled cars for a year.
** Energy Usage Intensity (efficiency rate): End of 2024: Reduced by 15% vs. a 2019 baseline (23.05 to 20.1 GJ energy / kl production)
*** Greenhouse Gas Emissions: End of 2024: Reduced Scope 1+2 GHG Intensity Rate by 20% vs. a 2019 baseline (1.15 to 0.91 mt GHG / kl production); absolute Scope 1+2 GHG reduction of 18% vs. a 2024 baseline (28,393 to 23,232 mt GHG).
Protect Nesting Habitats
Northern Keep’s passion is protecting nesting waterfowl by crafting our vodka with Certified Habitat-Friendly Winter Wheat sourced from local farms. As we use the best Canadian grains our prairie lands have to offer, we are proud to provide critical habitat for ducks, birds and other wildlife in Canada.
energy efficiency
We also made great strides in energy efficiency and know that every achievement has a tangible impact on our environment. Some of the key initiatives we’re proud to share are:
Water Usage Efficiency
We made significant strides in water conservation, achieving a 5% improvement in our water usage efficiency by the end of 2024, compared to our 2015 baseline. During this period, we reduced our total water usage by approximately 4%, equivalent to about 6.5 Olympic-sized swimming pools, from 416,280 kiloliters to 399,714 kiloliters.
Energy Usage Intensity
Our commitment to energy efficiency led to a remarkable 15% improvement in energy usage intensity by the end of 2024, based on a 2019 baseline. We reduced our energy usage from 571,258 GJ to 514,231 GJ, which could power over 600 average Canadian households for a year.
Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction
We’re happy to see a 20% reduction in our Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity rate by the end of 2024, compared to a 2019 baseline. Our GHG intensity decreased from 1.15 to 0.91 metric tons of GHG per kiloliter of production. This resulted in an absolute reduction of 18% in our GHG emissions, from 28,393 metric tons to 23,232 metric tons—equivalent to the emissions from over 1,200 gasoline-fueled cars for a year.
High-Efficiency, Low-Emissions Natural Gas Boilers
Our investment in high-efficiency, low-emissions natural gas boilers allow us to achieve significant energy savings while reducing our environmental impact. These boilers provide fast response times compared to traditional "fire tube" boilers, further enhancing our operational efficiency.
100% Renewable Electricity Usage
We are committed to sustainability by purchasing renewable energy attribute certificates, allowing us to support renewable energy development. This initiative helps us reduce our carbon footprint and meet our sustainability goals.
